UAC Prompts? :P

One thing you should do is use the Disk Cleanup command, mainly once you get your stuff on. My reason is the lovely Hibernation File Cleaner which can take up a few GBs and is completely useless if you don't use Hibernation.

Also, a great defrag:
http://mydefrag.com/ (Formerly JkDefrag)

I use the Slow Optimize when I haven't defragged in a while, and Fast Update to do routine optimizing.

Also, if you can, do the defrag in Safe Mode.

Yeah, the disk defragmenter is downgraded on Vista compared to the one on XP. :(

Well guess who got his voucher in the mail today for the free Windows 7 upgrade? ::)

I updated my first post. Found something better for the "file types" problem.

Wait... it isn't an actual disk? Now this pisses me off. The "copy" I'm responsible for my neighbor's computer has been sitting in the Hartford USPS office (or so the tracking says) since Tuesday! All for a friggin' piece of paper?

Couldn't they have just said "Here is the link to the requested download. Your product key will be e-mailed to the e-mail address you provided"

EDIT: Maybe you got yours from a different place, mine is from http://windows7upgradeoption.com/
It says it's being shipped on DVD... which makes much more sense for the listed weight and why it's been stuck.

Well first I had to register my laptop (warranty) at MSI Mobile and then next to my registered product was the free upgrade offer. I'm thinking like you. Why couldn't it be an e-mailed key? I found out that not only was it for a code, it's for the terms of use. OK, legal stuff. Still why couldn't the terms of service be in an electronic document like a PDF? The key is to submit it to that Windows 7 upgrade offer. Now I wait until December 6 for the upgrade disk to ship.

It will probably ship sooner. Mine said it would ship on the 29th but it shipped on the 23rd (the day after I ordered). Now I'm just waiting on the Post Office's end.

Still... Microsoft could have made it a download version (that's what you can do if you order from the Microsoft Store)

Yeah, think about it. It's a DVD installation. GBs worth of downloading. It would take me the whole day to get that! I prefer it DVD. Plus I can wait. I hear that the Windows 7 upgrade disk wipes the hard drive clean. I already moved all my documents from my old blue screen computer to my laptop. I plan to wipe my old computer clean and start back on day one with the Windows XP OS. Once I'm done with that I'll move all my stuff on my old computer and upgrade my laptop to Windows 7.

Upgrade disks normally do an in-place install (replacing your system files). I usually advocate against this because installs can take several hours and your system performance is hurt severely. I actually found this article on tricking the upgrade install in doing a clean install:
http://www.softsailor.com/how-to/10461-h....an-install.html

EDIT: And the ISO is about 3-4 GB, which on a 3Mbps connection (e.g. ATT Pro DSL which downloads around 316 KBps), it takes about one hour per GB. So if you have a faster connection than that...

Got the copy for my friend today.

What's very amusing is the "Time Sensitive Material" label on the top of the bubble envelope.

EDIT: Hey, I was able to do a clean install no problem; you just have to make sure you boot from the disk.

Yup it did. I just got a confirmation e-mail saying that the order has been shipped. All I need to do is wait 10-15 days to get it.

If your state postal service is like mine... well it will take that long. Of course you're closer to Kentucky... I think (which is where I believe mine shipped from), so it may come sooner.

Well I just got the Windows 7 upgrade disk. It came from Kentucky and I live in Illinois.

One thing still bothers me though. Will this upgrade under normal running conditions wipe my hard drive clean and install the Windows 7 OS? I am upgrading from Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit to Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit. If this question was answered I wouldn't be as hesitant. I just moved (not copied) most of my stuff from my old blue screen Windows XP to my laptop and don't want to lose what I have.

You can either do an in-place install (replaces system files), but this can take several hours and can make your system slow. If you boot from the disk you can perform a clean install (completely wipes everything).

I'm PMing you about something now
