In case you don't know, Paranormal Activity is a horror film that's sweeping the nation. It's increasingly growing popularity and is being known as the next "Blair Witch Project." After all the hullabaloo, I decided I needed to see this. I had no idea what was in store for me that night.
Paranormal Activity R For language Starring: Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat Directed by: Oren Peli 86 min
Simply put, Paranormal Activity is a haunted house story, but not any haunted house story. A couple is in a house where they are being tormented by something and the husband video tapes the events.
Before I even start the review, I'm gonna say it right here, right now, Paranormal Activity is THE scariest movie I have ever witnessed in my life. What started out as a small independent film with a budget of only 15,000 and unknown actors quickly grew to a worldwide phenomenon, and I see why. The film plays out like a "found footage" type but I'm not so sure that's technically what this film is. The film has no score, and what seems like no script because of how well written it is. PA really feels like you're watching home videos, it greatly ups the suspense.
Paranormal Activity goes where most modern horror movies don't go. It doesn't depend heavily on jump scares (although there are some memorable ones) rather it just fills you with terror and dread all 90 minutes. There isn't one time where you don't expect something to happen, even in daytime. Everything is so cleverly wrote and scripted, it plays out perfectly. It leaves you petrified.
PA ha a few iffies though. There are some scenes where you wouldn't think someone would put a camera there, like in one scene while they are talking, he sets the camera on the ground in the corner but then again, I can see a few reasons why they might out it there. Some plot points also seem highly unlikely. I don't think a spirit guy (the people who look at haunted houses, I don't know what they are called) would promise to help but then immediately turn and leave the house. Although it's not that bad, it could've been better.
Let's talk about the scare tactics again. As I said, PA doesn't rely on jump scares, it's its terrifying atmosphere that touches you and reaches out to you. At some points the scares are predictable and yet, you still cower in fear as most of the time it doesn't go as you expected. Many scenes of this film really did leave me cowering in my seat and my mouth wide open with my hands on my face.
You may start reading about PA and find that a lot of people didn't like the ending, thought it wasn't necessary. I on the other hand thought it was brilliant and scary. That does depend on which ending is shown however. There are two different ending for PA, I'm not sure it changes for each theater or showing or if the same ending is shown at every theater in he world, but all I know is that there is two different endings. One could be better than the other one. If you've seen the film, PM and tell me the ending you saw.
OVERALL As I sit in the recliner in the family room, typing this on my laptop, I have turned all the lights on, and fear something in the dark wants me. Paranormal Activity still scares me long after I exited the theater.

Cube| I'm not that good with horror either, but I still watch it and it's a whole lot of fun to get scared. You'll laugh about it after wards (or scream ).
